Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker slams ‘crazy’ drag queen show at Olympics opening ceremony: ‘God is not mocked’.
In one segment of the long and anthemic production, a group of drag queens are stretched out along an elevated red carpet.
Their assembly appeared to resemble Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of ‘The Last Supper’ by design.
A number of people took to social media to proclaim their offense to this display, with Butker one of them.
He tweeted out a video of the performance, quoting a verse from the Bible: Galatians 6:7-8. Friday the full verse, which is taken from the book of Galatians and reads, “Be not deceived, God is not mocked. For what things a man shall sow, those also shall he reap.
“For he that soweth in his flesh, of the flesh also shall reap corruption. But he that soweth in the spirit, of the spirit shall reap life everlasting. The talk show host added, “Would they have mocked any other religion like this? Appalling decision.”
A Paris 2024 spokesperson tells Page Six in response to the backlash, “Clearly, there was never an intention to show disrespect towards any religious group or belief. On the contrary, each of the tableaux in the Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony were intended to celebrate community and tolerance.”
The rep then explains that artistic director Thomas Jolly “took inspiration from Leonardo Da Vinci’s famous painting” of the Last Supper for the ceremony’s “Festivities” segment to “create the setting.”
“He is not the first artist to make a reference to what is a world-famous work of art,” the spokesperson concludes. “From Andy Warhol to the Simpsons, many have done it before him.”
