HUGE BREAKING: GOP Majority in the U.S. House Could Collapse as Early as Next Week — After Report Rep. Neal Dunn May Retire Early

Washington — A dramatic shift in the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives may be looming next week, according to multiple political reports, after Florida Republican Rep. Neal Dunn (R-Fla.) signaled he could announce an early retirement ahead of schedule — a move that would further erode the Republican Party’s razor-thin majority.

Dunn, 72, previously announced he would not seek re-election and plans to step down at the end of his term, but recent reports suggest he could leave before the term expires, potentially triggering a special election well before the 2026 midterms.

What This Means for the House Majority

Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the House — 218 seats to the Democrats’ 214, with a few vacancies already in place. If Dunn exits early, that would temporarily shrink the GOP margin even further. While a single departure would not instantly flip control of the House, it would leave the majority extremely fragile, giving Republican leadership no room for defections on critical votes and ramping up pressure on Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to keep every Republican aligned or secure support from Democrats.

Political observers say the precarious situation could make passing contentious legislation much more difficult and increase the likelihood of delayed or blocked House action on key issues.

Dunn’s Possible Early Retirement

Dunn, who has served five terms in Congress, announced in January that he would not seek another term, citing personal and family considerations as his reasons for stepping back. But in the past 24 hours, top political sources and reporters have reported that the Florida representative is expected to announce an early retirement next week, potentially setting a date before the 2026 midterms and triggering a special election this summer.

When asked about the rumors, Dunn told reporters he was “not making any comments right now,” a response that political analysts say is “not a denial.”

Speaker Johnson Tries to Hold the Line

House Speaker Mike Johnson has reportedly been encouraging Dunn to remain in office through the end of his current term to avoid further destabilizing the GOP majority. But with numerous Republicans already announcing they will not seek reelection, leadership is bracing for additional departures that could further tighten the numbers.

A truly razor-thin majority — or a temporary loss of it — could reshape the political landscape in Washington as lawmakers of both parties prepare for the 2026 midterm elections.
